Description of the ASFFQ

To get a good sense of what is happening in Quebec science fiction and fantasy, there is nothing like L'Année de la science-fiction et du fantastique québécois. You can find enlightened commentary on the complete range of novels and short stories published by Canadian francophones anywhere in the world, summaries of their essays, studies on the specialized periodicals published in Quebec, as well as the newsworthy events in the science fiction and fantasy literary community.

To date, the years 1984 to 1992 and 1997 to 2000 are available, as well as Le XIXe siècle fantastique en Amérique française and La Décennie charnière (1960-1969) - a quick look at our catalogue will give you the price for each volume. It is important to note that the ASFFQ are in limited distribution in bookstores, about 30 outlets in Quebec and France, however you can buy them directly from the publisher by individual volume or by subscription, for sizeable savings on the unit price (see our catalogue for details). Many public and school libraries are already subscribers to the ASFFQ, so you can consult them there using the indexes provided on this site.

If you want to know everything about Quebec and francophone Canadian science fiction and fantasy, or are simply looking for an engrossing novel or short story, don't hesitate to get L'Année de la science-fiction et du fantastique québécois, or ask your librarian.

An indispensable tool for research, and a great source of information about Quebec literature

Even though the years 1993 to 1996 have not yet been finalized, we can assure all those looking for an exhaustive source that the author and title indexes for those years are available on our site. As for the reviews, we hope to produce them as soon as possible. But, as desired by the majority of our subscribers, our teams of specialists will continue to give priority to new materials.

The indexing of novels and short stories published until the present is up to date. We can therefore offer within these pages complete indexes of all science fiction and fantasy novels and short stories published between 1984 and 2000. When all the links are completed, it will be possible to obtain, for all of the authors of Quebec who have published at least one science fiction or fantasy text :

• a biography of the author
• a list of interviews he or she has given
• a complete bibliography in the genres concerned
• a reference list of the titles mentioned
• and several hundred summaries and critical commentaries taken from all the Années de la science-fiction et du fantastique québécois, all written in simple, understandable language by the top specialists in science fiction and fantasy in Quebec.

For the second stage, we are planning to augment the indexes and database by adding the years 1960 to 1983. The final goal is to complete the index, database and collection of critical summaries for all the francophone Canadian science fiction and fantasy texts published since the beginning of our literature. And since we published Le XIXe siècle fantastique en Amérique française in 1999, the only unexplored gap that will remain is the period of 1901 to 1959.

You can consult them in two different ways...

• By clicking on the ASFFQ for 1984 to 2000, you can access the descriptions of each of these years, statistical tables summarizing the yearly production, and the author and title indexes compiled for those years.
• To consult the general indexes, those that contain all the authors, and all science fiction and fantasy titles, please click on "All authors," or "All titles."
