ASFFQ : 1985

For 1985, the output can be broken down as follows: 10 novels and 161 short stories (77 in 10 collections or anthologies, 84 in magazines and other publications), for a total of 83 writers, compared to 61 in 1984 and 44 in 1983. 2 novels and 48 short stories have also been reissued this year, including 3 short stories translated into English. A relative parity can be noted between science fiction and fantasy. SF has 8 novels and 101 short stories, while fantasy, in which fantastic and supernatural literature have been included, as last year, has 4 novels and 108 short stories.
There was a clear increase in the number of short stories, and the ratio of stories published in magazines and various specialized publications is slightly lower (66% versus 77%). But for anthologies, collections and novels, the trend is somewhat reversed, as almost half of them were put out by publishing houses used to publishing genre fiction - especially Éditions Paulines and its Jeunesse-pop collection, which has been clearly oriented towards science fiction and fantasy for some years, and of course The Préambule, which has two special collections, Chroniques du futur (Chronicles of the Future) and Chroniques de l'Au-delà (Chronicles of the Beyond), and which made a remarkable come-back in 1985.
In conclusion, the editors wish to bring to your attention two major works which despite certain similarities to and some borrowing from the genres we are interested in, have been excluded from this selection: La Constellation du Cygne, by Yolande Villemaire (La Pleine Lune), and L'Euguélionne by Louky Bersianik (Stanké, 10/10). Let's add that some titles for very young readers (Le Baiser maléfique, by Robert Soulières, among others), have also been excluded, since they treat their genre elements more like children's fantasy.
