Len Deighton

Photo : Random House UK
Len Deighton was born in London in 1929. A Royal Air Force photographer at the young age of seventeen, he worked various jobs after being demobilized in 1949, before earning a scholarship from the Royal College of Art. A graphic artist and illustrator, Deighton climbed the rungs of his profession to become artistic director of an advertising agency in 1969, while still finding the time to travel around the world by boat several times. His first novel, The Ipcress File, published in 1962, was an immediate success. Since then he has continued to publish spy novels, and has become recognized as one of the masters of the genre. This reputation has not kept him from bringing variety to his writing by publishing historical novels, essays on the Second World War, and even a few cookbooks.
