The sixties in Quebec: Robert Charlebois's L'Ostidshow,
Expo 67 in Montreal, Michel Tremblay's Les Belles-Soeurs,
the damming of the Manicouagan River... But it also saw the emergence
of science fiction and fantasy literature in Quebec. Using the
editorial approach that established the reputation of L'Année
de la science-fiction et du fantastique québécois,
Claude Janelle and his collaborators have expanded the scope
of their study to the Quebec literature of the sixties.
La Décennie charnière defines a corpus of
fantasy and science fiction stories of the period, offering summaries
and critical analyses of 20 novels and 140 short stories belonging
to these genres.
As Le XIXe siècle fantastique en Amérique française
did for the beginnings of this literature, La Décennie
charnière sheds a new light on the birth of modern
Quebec literature, brought to fruition by a new generation of
writers reflecting and even anticipating the important movements
that were transforming Quebec society. But La Décennie
charnière is also a collection of thirteen short stories,
including the most captivating and characteristic of this amazing
period, which saw Quebec literature open itself to modernity
and to the world
.
