Submissions
Here are a few guidelines for submitting a manuscript to Éditions Alire :
Alire is a specialized publisher. Every year we receive more than four hundred manuscript submissions. We therefore encourage you to read the following carefully in order to avoid making pointless submissions. We publish exclusively in french...
- Genres :
...what are commonly referred to as popular literary genres, that is to say crime and spy novels, as well as supernatural and fantastic stories, fantasy and science fiction. We also publish essays on these genres, or subjects closely related to them.
- Categories :
...fiction aimed at an adult readership, i.e. 16 years or older. Alire does not publish young adult or children's books, or essays on literary genres exclusively related to these categories.
- Length :
...works of at least 37,500 words, (225,000 characters), which is the minimal limit of what is commonly called long fiction, (a novel). We do not have a maximum word limit.
Important note :
We do not currently accept collections of short stories. The only works of this type are those specifically requested by the publisher.
Presentation of manuscripts
- Paper
The ideal paper size is 8 1/2" by 11", (letter format). The text must be typed and printed double-spaced, about 25 lines per page. Each line should be about 80 characters long (12-point type). If possible the submission should not be printed/typed front and back.
A single copy is required.
You can send it to us loose-leaf (making sure to paginate!), stapled, paper-clipped, or bound, etc. Make sure that all the pages are there!
- Electronic format
Since we have many editorial readers and all of them prefer to read hard copy, we do not accept manuscripts submitted by e-mail, or sent to us only in electronic form, on CD or any other medium.

We always appreciate it when a concise summary of the plot, (synopsis) is included with the submission.
When we receive your manuscript:
- An acknowledgement of receipt is sent out by mail within two weeks of the arrival of a manuscript.
- The editorial committee takes 90 to 180 days (depending on the number of submissions currently being reviewed) to make its decision. Éditions Alire cannot promise to give editorial reports to all authors.
- Submitted manuscripts can be returned to the author at any time, by mail, simply on request. A cheque or international money order for $5 Canadian ($10 for manuscripts from outside Canada), payable to Éditions Alire, must accompany the request to cover shipping and handling costs.
