Les Lions d'Al-Rassan
Translation by Élisabeth Vonarburg of
The Lions of Al-Rassan

The vital quest, the great crusade, is not a battle against the minions of some faceless Evil ; it is this more personal struggle - still so very much with us. And that is what Kay honors in this magnificient, deeply moving book.

Three cultures cohabit in Al-Rassan, the land of honey and incense whose beauty has been sung by poets for centuries. But peace is precarious between Asharites, Jaddites and Kindaths, a spark would be enough to send everything up in flames.

That's what happens when the khalif is murdered. All the petty kings of the city states of Al-Rassan immediately want to reunite the country under their sole authority, while in the north the monarchs of old Esperana feverishly prepare the reconquest.

In that highly charged atmosphere, the fate of three extraordinary beings, who have every reason to oppose each other, unite as one : Jehane Bet Ishak, a brilliant female Kindath physician, Rodrigo Belmonte, a famous Jaddite warlord and Ammar ibn Khairan, an Asharite warrior-poet, the very one who killed the old khalif.

Faced with the coming holy wars, will the two men be able to preserve their friendship, as well as the love they both feel for Jehane ?
