Terre des Autres

(Of Wind and Sand)

I've lived too many lives for one human female, so the images sometimes get mixed up. However, I will never forget my first Darztl.

Illustration : Guy England

On an extremely hot, sandy planet, a race of large lizards, the Darztls, have built a very complex civilization. For them the planet is called Sielxth.

One day, a colony ship from Earth makes an emergency landing on the planet. Seeing that it is habitable, the humans decide to settle there. For them, this land will be called Mars II.

Of course, in the beginning, there are a few close encounters of the third kind, and even attempts at cohabitation. Exchanges are attempted both by the Darztls and the humans, out of curiosity and the need to understand the Other, to come to grips with their differences. But fear and violence simmer just below the surface. Soon come the first skirmishes, all communication is broken off, and the relationship becomes one of hunting and slavery. In spite of the good will of many Darztls and humans, a new hell has been created...

Terre des Autres (Of Wind and Sand), the fascinating chronicle of extreme cultural shock, a novel of rare intensity.
